ABSTRACT

The paper briefly describes the current listening teaching in college English and medical humanities:viewing,listening and speaking,analyses and explores the strategies of teaching listening in this course in three aspects,namely training of reasoning ability-to train students to speculate about the main idea according to a number of key sentences and words ; teaching of notetaking skills-to teach students to take down key points of listening materials by applying certain notetaking format,simplified symbols and words of logical relation; teaching of phonetic knowledge-to teach students phonetic knowledge such as liaison,reduction,loss of plosive,assimilation,stress and intonation specifically according to the listening materials.

ABSTRACT

Oral English teaching for Chinese postgraduates has always been focused on the drill of language skills,thus little attention was paid to the cultivation of students' thinking ability. This pa-per explored into the definition and theoretical basis of critical thinking and gave a case analysis of how to integrate the cultivation of critical thinking skills into the oral English classrooms in an effec-tive way. The questionnaire and interview among students showed that questioning,controversial dia-logue,debate and survey can help students to form the habit of critical thinking in an effective way and are also proved to be popular among medical postgraduates.

ABSTRACT

Objective To discuss the relative importance of the 5 English skills and to compare medical majors' main purposes of English listening and medical majors' actual usage of English listening.Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among medical sophomores in the Second Military Medical University who had finished the college English course.Data were processed by Excel 2007 and statistical results were described by percentage.Results Participants paid enough attention to five English skills,especially the listening ability; a total of 98.4% of the participants recognized the importance of listening skills.Students' learning needs and course arrangements are mainly about examinations,graduations future study.Medical English course arrangements cannot satisfy the learning needs.Conclusions Students recognized the importance of five English skills,especially the listening skills.Students' learning needs are basically examination-oriented and the medical English course is not enough for the students.Suggestions on the English teaching,course design and the integration of college English and medical English are put forward in the paper.

In recent years,traditional English teaching has been greatly affected by network platform.As SMMU has been trying to perfect the Online English Writing Course,the questionnaire completed by the students taking the course shows that the course designs have proved effective in the improvement of research-based learning.
